What is a bucket truck?

A bucket truck, also known as a cherry picker or boom truck, is a type of vehicle equipped with a hydraulic mechanism that allows a person to be elevated vertically and reach high places such as power lines, trees, or signage.

Bucket trucks are commonly used by utility companies, telecommunications companies, and tree trimming services for tasks that require working at height. The bucket or platform at the end of the boom can typically hold one or two workers, along with tools or materials.

Bucket trucks come in various sizes and configurations, with some models featuring articulating booms that provide greater flexibility in reaching difficult or tight spaces. They are typically powered by diesel engines and have controls in the bucket for the operator to maneuver and control the height and reach of the platform.

Safety features such as interlock systems, emergency lowering devices, and harness attachment points are commonly included in bucket trucks to ensure the safety of workers while working at heights. Training and certification are typically required for operators to safely use a bucket truck.
